Russell completed his medical degree and doctorate of medicine at the University of Melbourne and attained his fellowship in Medical Oncology with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He worked as a medical oncologist at Royal Melbourne and Western Hospitals in Melbourne, was a Fellow at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and for seven years was Director of the Centre for Developmental Cancer Therapeutics (now Cancer Trials Australia).

In 2001, he joined CSL as Director of Clinical Development and for many years led the expanding clinical trial portfolio, ultimately as Senior Vice President of Global Clinical Development, including spending two years in the Pennsylvania office. He was the Chief Medical Officer of CSL in 2014-15. In 2015 Russell took on the role of Senior Vice President of Research and Development in the newly formed CSL Seqirus, which he continued in until his retirement in 2022.

During his 21 years at CSL and Seqirus, he led clinical trial programs from first-in-man to phase 3 regulatory studies for vaccines and therapeutic medicines, as well as overseeing regulatory approvals globally including in Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Europe, Japan and Latin America.
